Dr. Mouhanad Hammami did his postdoctoral research in Pediatrics at the Newborn Center of the University of Tennessee in Memphis, and then accepted a faculty appointment at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan and a research position at the Detroit Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics.
During his tenure at Wayne State he researched growth and nutrition in the newborn period specifically bone mass and body composition assessment using Dual Energy X ray Absorptiometry (DXA) in small subjects i.e. neonates and infants.
Dr. Hammami was involved in many clinical studies ranging from the effect of infant formula on bone mineralization in newborns to new childhood vaccine trials.
 Dr. Hammami joined the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA) in 2000, where he immediately became proactive and involved in its charitable and humanitarian medical efforts.  He served on the board of directors of the Michigan chapter, then as an executive secretary, and President for 2005.  During Dr. Hammami’s involvement with the Michigan chapter he helped establishing two NAAMA student sections at Wayne State University and Michigan State University School of Osteopathic Medicine and was instrumental in organizing the Residents and Fellow’s Council and the first walk to raise awareness for gynecological cancer in general; NAAMA’s Walk for Women’s Cancer benefiting the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
In 2004 Dr. Hammami conducted the first clinical study ever to assess the growth and living conditions of Palestinian children living in refugee camps in Lebanon.  This study was done in collaboration with ACCESS Health and Research Center in Dearborn, Michigan.
In 2006 he was granted the American Medical Association (AMA) foundation for Excellence in Medicine and Leadership award for his public health advocacy and community work. He is listed in the Marquis 2006-2007 Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and in Strathmore’s 2006-2007 Who’s Who in Healthcare.
Dr. Hammami is a member of several professional and honor societies and has had many publications in different medical journals. 
Dr. Hammami was appointed the executive director of the National Arab American Medical Association (NAAMA) and remains as an adjunct faculty at the department of Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
